Austen's main Character, Elizabeth, is an extraordinary asset to her society, by being polite, educated, beautiful, and in search for true love. In contrast, Austen depicts Elizabeth's best friend, Charlotte Lucas, as being the "girl next door". She is a simple, prepared housewife who will settle for a good home over love. Charlotte emphasizes the importance of marriage by saying, "I am not a romantic, you know; I never was. I ask only for a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Collin's character, connections, and situation in life, I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair as most can boast on entering the marriage state"(98). .
Elizabeth is able to stand out as a polite educated woman of her time. She always has a smart witty statement, in contrast to her mother who never seems to have right remark in any situation. The object of Elizabeth's affection, Mr. Darcy, comments towards the middle of the book, "The situation of your mother's family, though objectionable, was nothing in comparison of the total want of propriety so frequently, so almost uniformly betrayed by herself, by your three younger sisters, and occasionally even by your father" (138). Mr. Darcy, here, attempts explaining to Elizabeth that her family's rude behavior is unacceptable to society, therefore it is unacceptable for any man of status to marry into it. Therefore, Mr. Darcy he will not allow Elizabeth's sister, Jane and Mr. Bingley to get married, in spite of the couple's true love. Austen concludes the novel by allowing all the characters what he each individually deserves. Elizabeth's annoying and selfish sister, Lydia, marries the selfish Mr. Whikham, while her sister Jane marries her true love Mr. Bingley, and Elizabeth falls in love and marries her true love Mr. Darcy, seen as the best man in the land. Through these aspects of her novel Austen shows her traditional writing style.
