             The spread of Islam went forth with electrifying speed, the Muslim community expanded rapidly after the Prophet's death. Islam is not as some imagine in the West, a religion of the sword nor did it spread primarily by means of war. It was only within Arabia, where a crude form of idolatry was rampant, that Islam was propagated by warring against those tribes, which did not accept the message of God, whereas Christians and Jews were not forced to convert .
             Within half a century of the Prophet's death, Islam had spread to three continents, Asia, Africa and Europe. Over the next few centuries, this Empire continued to expand and Islam gradually became the chosen faith of the majority of its inhabitants. Among the reasons, for the rapid and peaceful spread of Islam was the simplicity of its doctrine. Islam calls for faith in only One God worthy of worship. Islam also repeatedly instructs human beings to use their powers of intelligence and observation. .
             As Muslim civilization developed, it absorbed the heritage of ancient civilizations like Egypt, Persia and Greece, whose learning was preserved in the libraries and with the scholars of its cities. Some Muslim scholars turned their attention to these centers of learning and sought to.
             acquaint them with the knowledge taught and cultivated in them. They, therefore, set about with a concerted effort to translate the philosophical and scientific works available to them, not only from the Greek and Syrian languages (the languages of eastern Christian scholars), but also from Pahlavi, the scholarly language of pre-Islamic Persia, and even from Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. In the early days of Islam, the extension of Islamic rule was based on an uncomplicated desire to spread the Word of God. Although the Muslims used force when they .
             met resistance, they did not compel their enemies to accept Islam. On the contrary, the Muslims permitted Christians and Jews to practice their own faith and numerous conversions to Islam were the result of exposure to a faith that was simple and inspiring.
