Ways to Reduce Illegal Street Racing

 

            The murmur of the crowd grows louder as the lime green Honda and banana colored Jetta screech into position. Inching toward the start line they exchange glares, then a nod of approval. Revving their engines, they jerk the stick shift into position. .
             Hands drop and go! The exhaust leaves behind a smoky cloud, the smell of burnt rubber and a crowd that just can't get enough. It's a world that has become popularized since the release of the movie, The Fast and The Furious, which takes a look at the world of illegal street racing. While creating a dangerous subculture in the city in the early hours of the morning, it has also leaves law enforcement seeking solutions. I believe that construction of a legal quarter-mile strip along with educational programs may help to reduce illegal street racing.
             To some racers, racing on a track versus a strip serves a completely different purpose. There is different excitement at the track. It's all in the system. On the street, you just have to make it through the night . . . on the track you just have to be there for the best time. A legal strip would help, but it may only reduce certain types of illegal street racing.
             There are different types of illegal street races - organized street races, poker races and impromptu races. In organized races, cars line up and race on an industrial roadway or in the early hours of the morning. Poker races take place when a group of racers leave a destination and weave in and out of traffic to get to a final destination. Impromptu races occur when two cars pull up at a traffic light and race once the light turns green. Impromptu races are probably responsible for most of the street racing deaths and unfortunately a legal strip will not help deter these races. .
             Anyone caught engaged in a speed race can be charged with careless driving or racing a motor vehicle. Fines range from $200 to $1,000 and/or imprisonment of up to six months.
