Scarlet Ibis Essay

From the moment Doodle was born, no one had any faith in him. His first couple of years was very hard and depressing. Brother had a difficulty getting accustomed to having a crippled brother but his mother forced them to spend time together. While they are out at the swamp, Brother decides to teach to Doodle things to change his situation. Although Brother might seem to being considerate, his actions are for his own gain. These actions greatly affect both Doodle and himself.
From the start, teaching Doodle to walk was for Brother's satisfaction. He didn't care about how Doodle felt. He just wanted a normal brother and someone to compete with. Brother was embarrassed to have a five-year-old brother who couldn't walk. He wanted to turn Doodle into the kind of brother he wanted. For Doodle to normal and happier was more of a bonus than the importance of Brother satisfying his needs.
On Doodle's birthday, when he first shows the family that he can walk, he attributes his walking success to Brother. Even though Brother taught Doodle to walk to make himself happy, Doodle was under the impression wants to help him. Brother started crying because everyone thought he genuinely cared about Doodle, when in fact, he was ashamed of having a crippled brother. He felt dishonest and undeserving of the attention and love. After Doodle learned to walk, Brother wanted to teach him to run, to swim, to climb trees, and to fight. Doodle knew he was somewhat incapable of these tasks but he continued to practice to make Brother happy. When Doodle had difficulties, Brother would pressure him to try harder. Brother seemed to have no sympathy towards Doodle's well being only to make himself happier.
In the end, Brother accomplished nothing. Doodle died because of Brother's harshness and Brother lost his brother. Because of Brother's approach towards Doodle's situation, everyone was left with a negative result.
