In 1958 he had his first exhibition at the Leo Castelli gallery and began to do his drawings for Dante's "Inferno". In 1962 he used his technique of silk-screening on canvas, mixed with painting, collage and affixed objects for the first time ever. Robert also did his first work with litographic, which he was given the award of Grand Prix at Ljubljana. Robert Rauschenberg gave his retrospective exhibition in Europe at the Galerie of Sonnabend, and in New York at the Jewish Museum for the first time, he also went on to produce his first dance Performance called Pelican. Robert gave yet another retrospective exhibition at the Whitechepel Gallery, London and won the Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale. .
Robert Rauschenberg was getting well known all across the United States and the world. He was getting invited to main historical events all over the world. But one of the events he was gratified to be at in 1968 when he was invited by NASA to witnessed the lift off at Kennedy Space Center of the Apollo 11. NASA also used his theme in his work to show their appreciation toward his artistic ability. .
By the time the 1970's, Rauschenberg started to his signature paintings of building visual fields from collisions of media images. He used many types of news clippings from magazines such as "Newsweekly", Esquire, popular dailies. His trashy pulp silk-screened and hand altered to blend battle on fabric, canvas, metal, glass, you name it he did it for the Pop Art era. Rauschenberg would put many different types of works mix with classic nudes, girlie mags, satellites, rocketry, weaponry, abandon bikes, faces of famous politicos, all tossed together exactly the way we want to have experience given to us in the informational age.
