             Robert E. Lee enrolled at West Point Military Academy in 1825. He decided to go there because his family could not afford him going to Harvard Law School, where his older brother Charles Carter attended. Lee was an excellent student and over a four-year period he did not receive a single demerit, a feat that no one else has still ever conquered. He was one of the most popular cadets in his class and was already starting to gain respect among his classmates. In 1829 Lee graduated from West Point, second in his class. The soon to be enemy Ulysses S. Grant finished around last in his class. Not long after, Lee was offered a position in the Corps of Engineers. .
             The Beginning of His Military Career:.
             .
             While with the Corps of Engineers, Lee got involved with many projects. Most of these projects were construction of military bridges, bases, harbors, and posts. Lt. Lee also helped build the St. Louis waterfront and worked on coastal forts in Brunswick and Savannah. In 1831 Lee married Mary Ann Randolph Custis of Arlington. The only daughter of George Washington Parke Custis, the grandson of Martha Washington and adopted grandson of George Washington. The couple moved into Arlington, the Custis house across the Potomac from Washington D.C., which would later become Arlington National Cemetery. While still in the Corps, Robert and Mary have their first child. The birth date was September 16, 1832 when along came little George Washington Custis Lee. Over the next few years Lee was still trying to earn his way up the ranks. Lee was a good soldier but promotion was very slow. The on May 31, 1837 another child of Robert and Mary came. His name was William Henry Fitzhugh L!.
             ee. Finally in 1838 Robert E. Lee was promoted to captain.
             The Mexican War:.

             The Mexican-American War broke out in 1845. Lee was then sent in to supervise road construction by General Winfield Scott, overall U.S. Army commander.
