Main Characters: Charlotte, Stable Owner, Vern, and Mr.
Story Summary: Charlotte is a girl from an orphanage. Her parents died when she was two because of a horse carriage accident. Luckily she lived thru that. Charlotte enjoyed being with Vern, the horse keeper at the orphanage, than play with dolls. Charlotte liked to be with the horses and race with them. When they forbid for Charlotte to ride horses, she decides to leave he orphanage. Vern helps her get prepared for her journey. They try to make it look like if she drowned in a near by river on the night of her departure. It worked. She walked all night until 6:oo a.m until she reached Concord, and from there rode on into Manchester. She faked to be a boy. In Manchester Charlotte, or as people call her Charley because she's a boy, she found a job as a stable maintainer. She ends up learning to drive a six-horse wagon. .
After eight years, the stables she worked at moved to Providence. Charlotte decided to head out west. She left with two of the stable owners stable boys. When they got to California, there was a lot of people and many women protesting that they should get the right to vote in elections too. But when she got there she as kicked in the face by a wild horse. A day later she lost sight in her left eye. No one wanted to hire her as a driver for a while, but she began to practice on her own. She started off by practicing with two horses and eventually moved her way up to six again. She relied on her one good eye and her other senses to move her way around. .
When she drives again but with people, there is a big rain and thunderstorm. But using her hearing and smelling senses, she finds the way and successfully accomplishes her first drive with only one eye. News of the one-eyed stage driver spread, and Charley became well known. She got paid a lot of money for her successful run, so with the money she bought her own little farm.
In her first November in California she signed up to vote in her county.
