Pride In The Contender

 

            
             Robert Lipsyte, an author of a few novels, became famous for writing interesting stories about human characteristics. Lipsyte wrote The Contender, one of his more famous novels, which has many human characteristics in it, including pride. This novel has several characters who show examples of pride. .
             One of several examples of pride in this novel is Alfred's pride in his ability to run faster that James. This is where Alfred thinks to himself, "One thing I could always do better than James. I was always faster,"(p.3). Alfred means that he has always been able to run faster than James. That is one thing Alfred has pride in.
             Another of the many things Alfred has pride in, his own ability to fight. This is where Alfred thinks, "Do this in my sleep" (p.78). What Alfred means by this is that Mr. Donatelli's training is to easy for him. That is another thing Alfred has pride in. his own ability to fight.
             .
             The final example of pride in this novel is the smaller cop's pride in Alfred's ability to run. This is where the smaller cop says, "Hang in there, Al, you"re lookin" good"(p.66). What the smaller cop means by this is Alfred is in good shape and he should continue to press on. That is the final example of pride in The Contender.
             Those are two of many examples of characters who show pride, Alfred and the smaller cop, in The Contender, Lipsyte is a incredible writer because of his ability to work stories smoothly into his novels.
