The World Trade Center and Pentagon bombings have re-defined many aspects of our lives as Americans. We now have a new mind frame about things we used to ignore and/or take for granted.
Our values have changed greatly with the recent tragedy. The way we value people, friends and family alike, has changed drastically. Knowing that thousands of normal, everyday people just like you and me, were at work one minute, and dead the next. We don'" take people for granted as much any more. We realize we aren't the "invincible nation" we once thought we were.
The definition of a hero in America has changed as well. No longer is hero status bestowed upon musicians or athletes. Now the honor is given to actual heroes such as firefighters, police officers, and our armed services. They are real-life, deserving heroes who put their lives on the line to protect not just our country and population, but also what we stand for as a country.
Another aspect of our lives drastically effected by the events of September 11 is our safety, security, and vulnerability as a country. Terrorism is no longer simply something we see on television broadcast from overseas. Now everything everywhere is suspect. Airport security and border crossing guards search more thoroughly. Immigration is scrutinizing everyone. We even have armed guards at our nuclear plants, water supplies, and other possible terrorist targets. We realize now we are not immune to terrorism as we once thought, thus this improving of our security and vigilance.
Patriotism is another one of the things affected by the catastrophe. Where ever you go in America there are American flags flying with pride. Also, we appreciate our military much more. Democrats and Republicans are working together on antiterrorism legislation. Both parties are backing the President. Unfortunately there are people trying to make money off this horrible event. Everywhere you go advertisements are screaming, "American Pride, buy our product.
