Fortunately the celebrities of the evening did not pay any attention to these censors, and instead showed a great respect for Eminem's right of free speech. Their support for Eminem should be appreciated by all. Stevie Wonder, Madonna, and Christian rocker Dan Hasseltine cheered for Eminem's rights. Elton John set the best example of all in his show of support for Eminem during this difficult time. Not only did Elton, an openly bisexual man, celebrate Eminem's prohibited lyrics by singing in the rap star's controversial performance, but he also gave the hero a sympathetic hug on stage at the end of the song. .

             There are still many other areas and sides to music that have faced the inspection of censorship. Take for example the sale and distribution of records. The government cannot ban a song, but Wal-Mart can and frequently does. Wal-Mart refuses to carry an album with a warning label because of their reputation as a wholesome store. Wal-Mart sells about 52 million of the 615 million compact disks sold in America. This is why the labeling hurts artists. Those are sales that could benefit an artist's career but because of a sticker on an album some stores will not carry it.
