Stairs

The white smog of tear gas was spreading around the main gate of our university. Hyun-jung, my girlfriend, was banded in solidarity with other demonstrating students and was shouting slogans with the students against the policemen. "Abolish the National Security Law!" "American Forces go home!" The demonstrating group was planning to walk downtown from the main gate of the university, shouting their slogans. There was some conflict at the front of the formation with policemen carrying shields and batons. When the conflict was getting serious, all of a sudden, another group of policemen, who were brandishing their batons and shouting "Charge!," attacked the group. The falling batons made the students moan and scream. The person who carried the megaphone and spoke through it was the first victim and the target of vicious kicks. The policemen, looking like messengers from hell, were acting outrageously, violent, and crazy. Hyun-jung ran onto the university campus after dispersing the other students. A senior, who had been running with Hyun-jung, fell down at the sudden blows of police batons on his head. Watching him being trodden on and kicked cruelly by the policemen, she was slightly shaking covering her surprised face. The blood, running on his head, stuck to his hair. He motioned for her to run away, grinding his teeth while being beaten. One of policemen beating him turned his head and looked at her. She stepped backward and ran again with other students pressing on. "Bang!, Bang!, Bang!" Tear gas bombs rose in the air, blowing up white smog. Surprised by the gas bombs falling in front of her, she fell down. Blood oozed from her knees through her trousers. She rose to her feet, putting her hand on her hurt knee, and ran again. She could hardly open her eyes from the effect of the tear gas. The university immersed in her tear was seen dimly in her eyes.
I looked up and stared at the gray sky over the student association building.
