The Revolutionary war in 1775 started because of the events that had taken place in one night. Tension had been growing between the American colonies and their mother country, Britain, ever since the French and Indian War in 1763. Because of this, the colonies started drilling militia and stockpiling weapons and supplies. When General Gage of the British army found out, he gathered about 750 men to seize and destroy colonial supplies and to capture John Hancock and Sam Adams. However, their plan failed mainly due to the actions on one brave colonist, Paul Revere.
Paul Revere was part of a committee whose purpose was to spy on the British soldiers and the American loyalists. One evening, he noticed unusual movements of the British and suspected something serious. They fixed signals to alert messengers, one being Revere, to warn the countryside of the Red Coat's advances toward Lexington. Revere then rode out alerting the minutemen of Medford, then continued on to warn Hancock and Adams.
Meanwhile the British were already having trouble. They had to trek through knee deep marsh only to be halted on the road to wait on provisions. Plus, when they were on the march to Lexington, people had started firing alarm shots and lighting beacons to wake the country.
Paul Revere and a few others had set off toward Concord to warn the militia there. Unfortunately Paul had been captured by a group of Red Coats. They questioned him then got nervous because of the threat of colonial militia, so they left to find the main body. Revere then found Hancock and Adams and they left. Soon after, the first shots of the war took place.
Paul Revere is one of America's many heroes who helped bring about victory against Britain in the Revolutionary War. I feel that citizens of the US should thank God for providing people like him and allowing us our freedom.
