One very controversial subject in America is over the legalization of marijuana. Many American citizens agree with me that marijuana should be legalized in all states for medical reasons, as well as for recreational use as well. Many agree that this would end a lot of violence on the streets. Ever since the sixties this has been an ongoing effort for millions of Americans. There has never been a documented case of overdosing due to excessive use of marijuana. There are millions of Americans who use this drug illegally every day to calm their nerves, and just to relax.
On the west coast this is a much more acceptable idea. In Alaska there are laws against marijuana however, law enforcement refuses to punish individuals who grow up to two plants. In California when you are caught with a misdemeanor amount of weed (under a ½ ounce) the cops usually just take it instead of taking you to jail because they have more important things to do, like catch murderers, robbers, and rapists. In a lot of cases even on the east coast there are a lot of crooked cops who smoke marijuana, and sell it to make a better living for them selves and their families. .
Many people claim that the only people using and selling marijuana are teenagers and young adults, well that statement is not true. Many wealthy men in large corporations smoke marijuana. This is not a problem we should be worrying about. There are many more important things our government could be focusing on other than prosecuting every person that has ten dollars worth of marijuana in their pocket. Year after year marijuana is imported into America from Canada, Mexico, and many more countries in the Eastern Hemisphere. The only reason I believe America won't legalize marijuana is because they can't figure out a way to tax it. Everyone knows the government won't do anything for Americans unless they're making the most money out of the deal. The government knows there are too many underground operations involved in smuggling marijuana into the states, as well as too many people producing marijuana already living in the states.
