How The World Plunged Into War Six Years After Hitler Gained Power

How the world plunged into war six years after Hitler gained power.
World War I was meant to be the war to end all wars but in 1933 when Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, it was clear that the peace would be shortly lived. Despite Germany playing a large role, many factors such as, the Treaty of Versailles, the aggression of other powers such as Japan, Italy and Russia, the failure of the league of nations, and the passiveness of the democracies all contributed to the outbreak of World War II in 1939. .
The death of President Hindenburg in 1934 resulted in Adolf Hitler becoming dictator of Germany. To gain support of the army he eliminated Roehm, the leader of the SA along with a large number of political rivals in the 'Night of the Long Knives'. Now that he was in charge Hitler was determined to make Germany the greatest military power in the world and in 1935 embarked on a program of rearmament, despite that it was a direct violation of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. The League of Nations condemned the German violation of the treaty, however no action was taken to stop it.
It was also in this year that Mussolini, the fascist dictator of Italy, wanting to expand Italy's overseas colonies, invaded Abyssinia. The League condemned Italy and introduced economic sanctions, however did not include a ban on exports that were vital to warfare so Italy continued its invasion and completed the conquest in 1936. .
While the European powers were concentrating on Abyssina and Mussolini, Hitler decided that it was an excellent time to remilitarize the Rhineland. On March 7th Hitler denounced the Locarno Treaty and marched 30,000 troops into Cologne. France, with 250,000troops mobilised, remained passive because Britain would not support her. Britain took the view that Germany was "marching into her own back yard'. Once again there were no consequences from the League of Nations for this aggressive action.
