Hate Crimes

One of the most recent hate crimes was against a young homosexual college student at the University of Wyoming. He was tied to a post and pistol whipped to death by other students from the school, just because he was gay (Dallas Morning News Oct. 14,1998). After that happened, students from all over the country came together condemning the actions of the offenders. Another incident that happened was in Jasper, Texas where a black man in his early 40's was dragged behind a pick up truck to his death just because he was black (Newsweek June 14,1998). It was three white men in there mid 30's who offered the victim a ride and then just killed him (Newsweek June 14,1998). This could have been an ugly site because Jasper, Texas was a town that could of just went on a rampage in destroying the town by having racial voluntary acts in retaliation to the incident. The Ku Klux Klan did show up to march and so did the Black Panthers. They were there to get a message out and across to each and every individuals who had any thoughts about committing a crime. These two incidences should not have happened at all. Two people who were killed for something they could not control, the type of person they were. What was the use? What did the people who committed the crime get out of doing such harsh things? The people in Jasper, Texas came together in a time of need. They could have just either left the situation alone or started a big fuss, but they came to the family's needs and the town stuck together to make sure that nothing else bad was going to happen to either make the town look bad, or cause a big violent lash out. So one might want to know what was done to the offenders, well jail time, and a trial most certainly. As for the town people in Jasper they were a very!.
upset, angry, and just a shocked group of humans. So what is one to do? How do we, as people, stop the violence and stop the hate? It cannot be stopped completely, but we do have laws to try to help protect us from the crimes.
