Hatchet By Gary Paulsen

Born on May 17, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Gary Paulsen is the author of more than 40 books, 200 magazine articles and short stories, and several plays; primarily for Young Adults. Paulsen's interests in books and reading came when he was a teenager and walked into a library to escape the cold of a Minnesota winter. Once inside, and much to his surprise, the librarian offered him a library card and a book to read. Reading helped Paulsen cope with a difficult family situation then and remains a constant in his life today. Much of Paulsen's work features outdoor settings showing the importance of water and woods to the harmony of nature. He often uses a coming of age theme, where a character masters the art of survival in isolation as a rite of passage to manhood. Some of his best books are Dancing Carl, Tracker, The Dogsong, and The Crossing.
This takes place in the Canadian wilderness near an L shaped lake set in the late 1980's. Brian (the main character) .
finds himself lost deep in the woods with just himself and the clothes on his back. The only thing he see's around him is a lake and a bunch of trees.
The main characters in this story are Brian Robenson who takes a plane to canada to see his father and the pilot of the plane (no name was given for him) who has a heart attack while flying the plane causing it to crash .The main conflict in the story is when Brians plane crashes and only he survives and he is left to defend for himself in the wilderness. Another conflict in the story is boy versus nature. Brian fights the wilderness to survive. The other is Brians internal conflict that he is aware that his mother is having an affair.
