Meanwhile, Montresor chains up Fortunato and builds a wall around him. He leaves Fortunato to suffer until his death in the dark, cold vault inside the brick wall.
The two types of themes that can be argued that are present in the "The Cask of Amontillado", and "The Black Cat", are revenge or the theory of perversity. In most of Poe's works, Perversity covers the fact that a person does what he does, when he feels he should not. A part of this theory is that these characters want to hurt or kill someone alive because he/she has been good to them. According to J.Rea, "perverseness" in "one of the primitive impulses of the human heart"(308). Sometimes human beings may feel a sense of hatred for something or someone they love because they grow tired of it as time passes. It's like an instant impulse.
