English as the Offiial Language: Why Not?

English is the majority language, therefore it should be made the official language.
Students have difficulty succeeding in the average classroom if they do not speak English, so school districts have developed ESL classes which are taught in English by bilingual teachers who help the students learn English at their own pace. The other option for non-English speaking students is the federal Bilingual Education Act which on average costs American taxpayers 1.7 billion dollars per year to fund the bilingual schools and bilingual classes. Many call this a waste of taxpayers money. Frank Meyer, an immigrant who learned English on his own is quoted as stating, "When I came to this country at age 12, I received D's and F's the first year in 6th grade. But I was lucky, English as a second language' had not yet been invented and I was not coddled in my mother tongue."" As the US Department of Labor found, people are more prone to learning English easier if they are surrounded by the language they are trying to learn.
Money is also becoming an issue for having a multi-lingual America, " The Los Angeles City Council prints all its public notices in six foreign languages in addition to English, doubling its annual budget to $1 Million."" (US-English.org) One proposal to solve this issue was for the United States to adopt a dual-language much like Canada, but that 3.
would cost quite a bit of money. -A similar dual-language policy would cost the United States more than $60 billion over 10 years.""(Annual Report of the Canadian Commissioner of Official Languages) Canada has a it easier because there are two main languages spoken in the country where in the US there are over 200 languages spoken. Without listing all of the numbers just imagine how much money is spent each year on the printing of multi-language documents by the Government Printing Office, the U.
