This movie has a very interesting story line, but the way the movie projects this rebellion is through violence. The main characters are always punching, kicking, shooting, stabbing, and eventually killing their enemies. The reason this movie was a big hit is because it presented its audience with action and suspense. "Chocolat" failed to present its audience with those nail-biting moments, therefore creating a disinterest in the movie. The reason "Chocolat" has won awards is because it's story line and its presentation of rebellion is overall better than most blockbuster movies. However, the reason it hasn't been as successful at the box-office is because it lacked those qualities that people today want to see.
Another movie we can compare to "Chocolat" is the movie "Point Break". In this movie, a group of four surfers who like the high life, revolt against the principles of the society they live in. In an effort to show that the human spirit is still alive the group heists banks and proceed to use the money they steal to fund a year round surfing vacation. This is another type of movie that presents an interesting story line in saying that the human spirit is still alive and not oppressed by society and its idealistic principles. This is exactly the type of movie that people want to see, a lot of action and violence. In "Chocolat", this same type of rebellion is shown. The townspeople are so used to their plain lifestyle they act as if they can't think for themselves and let the mayor and the church tell them what is right and wrong. The main difference between these two movies is that "Point Break" shows this rebellion in a violent and law-breaking way, while "Chocolat" shows this rebellion in a compromising and patient way. Once again, most audiences will be pulled to "Point Break" simply because it has the action and violence that audiences nowadays want to see, while "Chocolat" still contains a better message in its delivery.
