Same Sex Marriages

" People who oppose same sex marriage argue that the definition of marriage is a relationship in which a man and woman bear children. They think that by recreating the normal family, we do damage to the future of children in society. These organizations fear that homosexuals will spread diseases such as AIDS and HIV.
             It has been proven through time that the Bible has been interpreted in many different ways. Every religion has its own interpretation of right and wrong. For example, conservative theologians view the friendship of Jonathan and David as totally non-sexual in 1 Samuel 18:1: " the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul:" (Bible). The liberal theologians view this relationship as homosexual. Rabbis, Presbyterians, Episcopalians and some Baptist ministers are performing same sex commitment ceremonies. These ceremony's may not be legal marriages, but they prove that some religious groups are beginning to accept the idea of homosexual unions.
             The idea of marriage as a means to procreate in the society of today is preposterous. There are many married couples who do not have children for several reasons. Either they are infertile or they simply choose not to have children. The argument of homosexual couples not having children is also false because many homosexual couples have families, whether they were previously married and have children from that marriage, or choose to be artificially inseminated or in some cases adopt children. William Eskridge Jr. points out in his book Gaylaw that "social scientists have repeatedly found that children raised in lesbian households are as well socialized, psychologically adjusted, and capable of peer relationships as children raised in different sex or single - parent households" (295). .
             The illogical argument that homosexuals spread more diseases such as HIV and AIDS is becoming less of a problem.
