Eugenides is most famous for his insight into the human mind and challenging perils of life which most view as quite disturbing. Some have wondered how he could have imagined such situations without actually having lived them, and present them in such a convincing matter. What drives him to write these compelling novels about five suicidal girls going through adolescence and a teenage girl who realizes she isn't just a she but a he?.
On March 8, 1960, Jeffrey Eugenides was born in Detroit, Michigan. Eugenides went to Brown University and received his B.A. in English, and later went to Stanford to receive his M.A. in creative writing. He now lives in Berlin, Germany. He originally considered becoming a priest or monk after he spent a week with Mother Teresa in India while on a break from college. He explained to the Calgary Herald, "I was so unformed in my personality and was trying on different personas; being a saint was a bit tight on my shoulders, though. At 20 you can really change your philosophy of the world by reading a single book, or by one chance meeting.". (Nunex, Christina 1) His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, The Yale Review, Best American Short Stories and Granta's Best of Young American Novelists.
Eugenides' first book, The Virgin Suicides, is best described as haunting, compelling, and chilling. The book begins on a startling note: "On the morning the last Lisbon daughter took her turn at suicide. the two paramedics arrived at the house knowing exactly where the knife drawer was, and the gas oven, and the beam in the basement from which it was possible to tie a rope." (Eugenides, Jeffrey pg.3) The story is told by a teen boy, who is a neighbor to the lisbon sister.
