It is said by Roopharine and Johnson "that the recognition of the unique contributions of diverse cultural groups and multicultural activities in general could only serve to foster respect for individuals differences while simultaneously enhancing cultural pride and children's self-esteem." (1) This statement is a great one because it discusses multicultural groups and activities. This fosters individual differences. This statement also speaks on the things that many schools do not have but are a natural occurrence within the schools full of minorities (like many high schools) today. Diverse groups and activities are all the students do, and because of this, self-pride and self-esteem is built very strongly. The familiarity of peers and the common lives and experiences that students share create a common bonding and camaraderie that diverse cultures can share. This is something that plays a big role in a child's development and learning. Looking at the diverse cultural settings is important to teaching and plays a significant role in any area of a child's development. The issues that need to be addressed in a child's life may vary with each ethnicity and culture. So, in a diverse cultural setting the needs of students will be along a wide array of issues, and the ability to address those issues will be difficult for anyone. "[T]he challenge to address these issues is gaining importance. Witness the urgency with which educational critics are calling for curricular reform to include greater attention to issues of equity and cultural diversity." (Roopharine 2) This is an interesting point of view because it is one of the few that makes the connection between cultural diversity and curriculum. .
One issue that is often overlooked when discussing cultural diversity is the curriculum and the teachers to address it. I feel that the cultural diversity issue in America is flourished in the educational system.
