The beach is illustrated as a paradisiacal place. Romanticism encompasses idealism. .
Transcendentalism also contains this characterization of integrity. As in "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls-, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once again incorporated idealism in his writing. From "A Psalm of Life-: "Lives of all great men remind us/we can make our lives sublime."" Sublime' in this context implies nobleness, adoration and veneration. If we look to the lives of great men (and learn from their mistakes) we can be sublime. Ralph Waldo Emerson acknowledged another aspect of idealism. "Is it so bad then to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever too flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood."" ("Self-Reliance-). Emerson related misfits with pure and wise spirits, perhaps they are just misunderstood'. Henry Wadsworth Thoreau, author of "Civil Disobedience- and Walden, integrated idealism with both. From "Civil Disobedience- "I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government."" In an exemplar society, a better government is needed, rather than no government. "I wanted to live deep and suck the marrow out of life."" (Walden) Thoreau interpreted live deep' as living life without expectations or limitations, thus moving towards perfection. As in Romanticism, idealism is existent in Transcendentalism. .
A person's potential is not defined by wealth, background, or education, but rather the worth of the individual. "Thanatopsis- displays this theory. .
Yet not to thine eternal resting place.
Shalt thou retire alone, nor couldst thou with.
Couch more magnificent. Thou shalt lie down.
With patriarchs of the infant world - with kings,.
The powerful of the earth - the wise, the good.
Fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past,.
All in one mighty sepulcher.
