Tourette Syndrome is an inherited disorder characterized by involuntary utterances and body movements. It was named after Gorges Gilles de la Tourette, a French doctor who first described the symptoms in 1885. This disease affects many people around the world and can basically ruin people's lives or at least prevent them from leading normal social lives. The cause of this disease is an inherited chemical imbalance in neurotransmitters that carry signals between nerve cells. The symptoms of this disease are numerous and are to say the least, very noticeable. These can include eye blinking, eyebrow raising and head shaking. Also, sadly, there is no known cure for this though some drugs ease the symptoms. .
Tourette syndrome is an inherited disease and it affects more males than females. The symptoms, called tics, result from an abnormality in neurotransmitters. These are the chemicals that carry signals between nerve cells, which would explain the involuntary movements. If too much, or too little, is produced, it would cause the information transmitted to be interpreted poorly and result in movements which were not meant to happen, or repeated movements if the signal was sent too many times. This chemical imbalance usually shows itself before the age of 21, usually between the ages of 7 and 10. Although this disease is not psychological, because of the effects on the person's mental state from a young age, it can often lead to severe emotional problems trying to deal with it. Depression and anxiety are common ones (World Book). Nearly 1 in 200 people are estimated to be affected by Tourette syndrome, though there is no definite number (www.tourette.ca).
The symptoms of Tourette syndrome are very noticeable and in the later stages can be quite numerous (world Book). Although one's actions may constitute the belief that they have Tourette syndrome, Tics must be evident for at least 1 year before a doctor can make the diagnosis (http://www.
