Gulch the "witch" of a neighbor, that Toto bites. Symbolizing Mrs. Gulch into a witch-like figure, may display Dorothy's relation between the two, thinking that like the wicked witch of the west Mrs. Gulch is haunting, scary, mean, and cruel. In the Meaning of Your Dreams Dictionary "witch" means: "Evil. Black magic. Intuition and wisdom. Fear of power." .
Dorothy represents a strong moralistic character. For example the Lion jumps out of the bushes and begins growling at Toto, in the face of what might have been great risk to her, she slaps Lion on the nose and scolds him for picking on poor little dogs. Dorothy acts with courage from a moral aspect: It is wrong for more powerful things to pick on weaker things. Another example is during the final scene in the room of Oz, the group is taunted with flame, smoke, and a thundering voice in an attempt to scare them. Lion faints. Dorothy stands up to the great and powerful Oz and says: "Oh . . . oh! You ought to be ashamed of yourself! Frightening him like that, when he came to you for help!" .
The wizard in the movie, who represents the fake fortuneteller in Dorothy's life, symbolizes false escape. By pretending he could read the crystal ball, he implied Dorothy to go back home. In her dream he falsely portrays the high and might Wizard of Oz, and attempts to again send Dorothy back home; but only ends up in both stories on his own merry way. .
Glenda the Good Witch and the Munchkins represent almost a child like state, filled with happy, loving, and caring thoughts. Like children they are content to live in the moment. With candy, singing and dancing, this appears to Dorothy as maybe finding true happiness.
Symbols do not have to be characters they can be objects too. An object one may not notice as a symbol is the window in Dorothy's room, or the crystal ball.
