In the wild west outlaws freely ran throughout all of the west on horses stopping in towns to rob banks or just cause trouble in whatever way they could find. Creating themselves a symbol or a name so where ever they would go and whatever they would do people would know whom to give credit or "blame" to. .
But far from the vacant wild land of the west was the gangs of the east. These gangs are most similar to those of today in urban cultures and big cities. In the late 1890s and early 1900s immigration rolled into the United States , directly into New York City . Immigrants of this time were in the least to say welcome, most of European decent came over due to famine and lack of opportunity in their native countries. .
The most popularly known gang to develop at this time was "the Five Points Gang" .Named its name because its home base, was located at the "Five Points Bowery" a section in lower Manhattan. The most significant street gang to form in the United States before this point, "The Five Points Gang" was led by an Italian immigrant named Paolo Antonini Vaccarelli, or maybe better known as Paul Kelly with his cocommander Johnny Torrio. With Paul Kelly as leader Johnny Torrio would recruit street hoodlums from all places across New York City to their gang . " The Five Points Gang" became a "playground" to many young street gangsters, and a main source of operations for the Mafia. .
From "The Five Points Gang" spawned many other gangs and operations. Originally recruited to "The Five Points Gang" was one of the most feared gang leaders of all time, "Scarface". Born in New York and recited as a young teenager , Al 'Scarface' Capone became a name remembered whenever thinking of gangs of the past . He moved to Chicago after he was asked to go help with assisting in maintaining control of mob territories located there. It was there that Al Capone became one of the most violent and prolific gangster in not just Chicago, but the United States helping create the type of street gangs so popular among cities of America today.
