Poetry Explication

Vincent Millay is lying on her back and starts to look off into the sky. While peering into the sky, she gains a sense of what God is like. Edna St. Vincent Millay expresses the understanding of God's essence through a total sense of compassion for all mankind and a total awareness of the "good" that is in our lives.
Edna St. Vincent Millay uses a technique of lying on her back and starring off into the sky to increase her awareness. At first, she is not intimidated by the sky and says that it must stop somewhere. She feels as though she could touch it with her hand. As she tries to touch the sky with her hand, she becomes overwhelmed and realizes that it goes on into infinity. Becoming overwhelmed by the thought of infinity, Edna St. Vincent Millay tries to relate her awareness of infinity to a total sense of compassion for all mankind. As she does this, she talks about a man who is starving in Capri. Edna St. Vincent Millay claims that she feels him staring at her and can feel his hunger. She can hear his moan. Just by seeing him, she is able to feel his pain, feel his hunger, and know what he is going through. Then she imagines she sees a harbor filled with dense fog. In that harbor she sees two ships that collide and she hears a thousand screams. She not only exclaims that she hears a thousand screams, but each scream bolts out of her throat. Feeling total compassion for all mankind, she was able experience the pity, like the pity of God. Edna St. Vincent Millay develops a sense of compassion for her fellow man. .
While continuing to lie on her back, Edna St. Vincent Millay describes herself as sinking into the ground. She feels herself sinking into the ground until she is six feet under the earth. While lying under the earth, she claims that she is rested and is gladly dead. Suddenly, she starts to hear the rainfall and realizes that she likes it much more that she ever has before.
