N. compound. The wall was about 50 feet away from the U.N. building at the site of the blast. The recent trend of car and truck bombings has been a major blow to our country. "They are going after softer targets because they know they are unsuccessful against military targets," Maj. Gen. Ray Odierno of the Army's 4th Infantry Division said July 25 (CNN.com). .
The idea of exploiting softer targets is far from new. In 1996 Eric Robert Rudolph unleashed a pipe bomb in Atlanta's Centennial Park. His action killed one woman and injured hundreds. The Olympic Stadium may have been his primary target. Fortunately it was heavily guarded. Rudolph then settled for a target that he had easy access to (Joy Johnston). There will be numerous large sporting events held in the upcoming years. This paper will focus on one stadium and one event in particular. The focal point will be the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The event of emphasis is the Nokia Sugar Bowl. This event will be held on January 4th in New Orleans. It is scheduled to be played at 8:00pm Eastern time at the Superdome. The stadium has a seating capacity of 72,000 people. The Superdome has a parking capacity of 5,000 cars and 250 buses (Broad Band Internet Providers). .
This stadium is highly vulnerable to two types of attacks. The first being a biological attack. A terrorist may have plans on unleashing a deadly disease while inside of the Superdome. It may be weeks or even months before we can trace evidence back to the individual who started the spread of the disease. Thousands of fans are compacted into one large area. It will not take long before a virus gets airborne and spread throughout the stadium. The Superdome is a large structure, but it is still enclosed. A virus can possibly find its way to the air vents and infect thousands of people. .
Explosive devices can also have a devastating effect on this event. There will be thousands of tailgaters camping out in the parking lots surrounding the Superdome.
