The Death of Notorious B.I.G

Unlike the article that appeared in Newsweek, the article "East Coast Rapper Notorious B.I.G, Killed in Los Angeles Drive By Shooting" taken from Jet portrays Biggie as a well known rapper. A rapper that made it out of the ghetto but was tragically killed in a drive by. The title of this article is self explanatory "East Coast Rapper Notorious B.I.G, Killed in Los Angeles Drive By Shooting." The Jet magazine also states that before his death, " Notorious B.I.G, a popular, New- York rappper, was one of many in Los Angeles for the Soul Train Music Awards"(Jet 14). This simply states that Biggie was in L.A for entertainment, not just, hiding out. Although Jet does mention that he rapped about selling drugs and life in the ghetto, it also states that he was not proud of dealing drugs (Jet 15). Biggie states that 'I can't say I'm proud of dealing drugs Live in the real bad part of the hood for a while, and you'll see how desperate it can make you' (quoted from Jet 15). The article in Jet concentrates on the positive side of Biggie, such as albums going platinum and giving back to the community.
The language in the Newsweek article also depicts Biggie as being a gangster. For instance, Leland makes reference to Biggie's security in L.A mentioning the "Crips" (Leland 74). The "Crips" are a Notorious street gang on the East and West Coast. Leland also implies that Biggie's death was the cause of street gang rivalry he states, "Knight [ Suge Knight CEO of Death Row Records, and suppose to be linked to Biggie's murder] is a former NFL hopeful linked to the Bloods street gang"(Leland 74). The "Bloods " are a rival gang to the Crips and as Leland implies the cause of Biggie's death. He also implies that Biggie knew he was going to die by using words as if "he brooded over his own death"(Leland74). Leland also uses race in the Article. He mentions Bill Stepheney and adds to his comment that he is a "black man"(Leland 76).
