Think of an application for a composite material that you would like to explore. In an Word document (that you are to attach) of less than 1 page (double spaced, 12 pt font) describe the application, some critical factors, and anything else that might be important. Include pictures if you can (scanners are available free of charge in the Media Services).
An application I would like to explore with composite materials would be in longboards (long skateboards). The material introduced would have to be flexible, strong, light, and pending on ability stiff. This would give us ample opportunity to not only explore performance indexes but also to put this form of engineering into practice for something that we would be able to use. Some critical factors in the making of these longboards would be it would have to have a strong environmental resistance while maintaining light weight with enough strength to hold people on it without deforming its shape. As you can see the wheels are further away from each other then a normal skateboard which would mean that more pressure would be put on the center of the skateboard. Our main objective would be to somehow maintain the strength a skateboard needs to stand on, but because of the length we need to do this while also leaving flexibility. Some advantages of using a composite would be it could augment durability, light weight, and very strong. Some disadvantages would be the added cost and difficult to make. .
             1) Suggest and justify a Performance Index for an airplane wing material .
For the airplane wing material I would like to augment the capability of stress so under pressure and high winds it wouldnt change shape or break. I would like to mitigate the weight because that would make the plane not only go faster but safe alot of gas. I woould also like to minimize strain so it didnt change shape in mid-flight. This would cause a disturbed flight and nothing good could come out of that.
