The Devil and Daniel Webster

Similarities and differences between the story and playwright of.

In "The Devil- both had the same basic characters, Jabez, Webster, and the Devil. Jabez was also at first poor until he sold his soul for two cents to the Devil just like in the playwright and in the story. In both stories Jabez is an elected official of the state. Also, he forgets that the Devil has to come to collect his soul that belongs to him. In both stories there is also a brief appearance of Miser Stevens, whose soul is now in the form of a moth, which "warns" Jabez of the danger that lies ahead if the Devil takes his soul.
There were many differences in "The Devil-Such as, at the beginning of the two stories. At the beginning of the playwright, it starts out at Jabez and Mary's wedding. While at the beginning of the short story, it started out talking about how Webster's soul still lives on the sound of the wind and storms, even though he is dead. It even talks about how he was a great farmer and a person and the all around big shot for a while. Another difference between the two stories would be when Jabez has that whole conversation between him and his wife. In the short story, that never happened. The trials too were different. In the playwright, it was more into detail about what each character said, but in the short story it was very brisk and most of the time it was just The Devil and Webster talking. These are the similarities and differences between the two.
For the most part I liked the short story version of "The Devil and Daniel Webster". I liked it it just because it was shorter, but because it focused more on who the story was actually about. The Devil, Daniel Webster, and Jabez Stone. It wasn't about the fiddler at the party. That's what I really didn't like about the playwright. They trailed off and dwelled on unimportant issues and people, such as the fiddler and Mary. I also liked how in the short story they told about how bad Jabez Stone's luck really was.
