Brutus had great promise, ability, and strength of character. Brutus" tragic flaw was that he was too trusting. Cassius had handwritten notes thrown into Brutus" room in an attempt to make Brutus think that the common people wanted him to take action against Caesar. After reading the notes, Brutus made his decision to kill Caesar. Brutus says, "O Rome, I make thee promise, If the redress will follow thou receivist, Thy full petition at the hand of Brutus!" (II.i.56-58). Usually, trusting people can have a good and positive affect, but in this case, you should know who you can trust.
Brutus honestly felt that he had to kill Julius Caesar in order to save Rome from tyranny. Brutus says, "Whereto the climber upward turns his face, But when he once attains the utmost round, He then unto the ladder turns his back" (II.i.23-25). After Caesar died, Brutus trusted Antony not to blame the conspirators in his speech at Caesar's funeral. Antony broke that promise and turned the plebeians against Brutus and the conspirators. Brutus talks to Mark Antony and says, "You shall not in your funeral speech blame us, But speak all good you can devise of Caesar" (III.i.245-246). .
Brutus" most serious crime was that he was in charge of the assassination of Julius Caesar. Marcus Brutus, a servant and close friend to Caesar, had a strong relationship to Caesar but also a strong relationship to Rome and its people. Brutus says to Cassius, "What means this shouting? I do fear the people do choose Caesar for their king.yet I love him well" (I.ii.85-89). Brutus was extremely loyal to the people of Rome, going to any extreme for the good of them and his own ambition.
On the Ides of March, as Caesar was assassinated, Caesars last line is, "Et tu, Brute? Then fall, Caesar" (III.i.77). This shows that Caesar would not die without Brutus" stab. Caesar realized that there must be a noble reason for this assassination if Brutus was in it.
