Image Is Everything

It is no wonder why in 1998, 22,000 American teenagers had cosmetic surgery (Plastic Surgery). These numbers are especially frightening because many of these teenagers have not even finished developing. It is sad to see that even our youth is becoming obsessed with image, so early on in life. .
Another example of the extreme lengths women will go to for the sake of appearance, is tanning salons. Images of tan and beautiful female stars, such as Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, and Christian Aguilera, again convince us of what we must look like. We are all aware of the dangers involved with tanning, yet there are almost 20,000 tanning salons across the United States that are visited by more than a million people each day (Woo-Ming). In addition to cancer, prolonged radiation exposure can lead to a dysfunctional immune system, sun and eye burns, cataracts, and photosensitivity reactions to medications (Woo-Ming). These warnings not only appear in magazines, newspapers, and songs, but also inside the actual tanning salons. There is no chance of the customers not being made aware of the high risks involved with tanning. However, these warnings do not stop women visiting these salons, because to them, having beautiful, bronzed, and "healthy" looking skin is worth the risk.
The large cosmetic industry also proves women's incredible desire to improve their image. Women spend hundreds of dollars each year on products to help them enhance their appearance. Cosmetic commercials deliberately place gorgeous models in their advertisements because they are aware of how badly women yearn to be attractive. This strategy is often very successful, with women thinking, "If I buy this product, I too can look like those models." Many women spend more time applying their makeup than they do with their families, some of them do not even feel comfortable leaving their own home without makeup. They need to wear this mask, and paint on this artificial facade each day, because it makes them feel better about themselves.
