Once, in the story, she was derided by comparing into a grasshopper mainly because she wore the same cloak which she had a previous year ago. Hilda would also lock the bathroom door overnight so that Minnie would not be able to get the cold water she wanted, and when she woke up in the morning, the breakfast meal would not be pleasant to eat. Every time there would be guests or friends that would visit the house, she was required to go outside. These were just proofs that she was treated differently in contrast on how an educated person would treat her sister-in-law.
             Intellectually, she was compared to Roses, James Moggridge's wife. She was of the unborn children of the mind, illicit and loved unlike Minnie. This was the main reason why James did not gave any attention and interest with Minnie during meals with Marshes. .
             Society versus woman. As the narrator inferred about Minnie's past experience, the society (and even herself) blamed her for what had happened twenty years ago. While she was passing down the streets of Croydon, the violet loops of ribbon spangled in the electric light caught her attention. Since it was sale time in the shop she decided to take a peek inside. However, she lost tract of time, became busy, and the verity about home slipped her mind. She ran and hurries but it was too late. The abandoned kettle scalded her baby brother causing death and tragedy. Is that really her fault? Thus, this arises in the question about the role of women in society - their true responsibilities.
             These were the reasons why Minnie Marsh was unhappy. These were the reasons why she was weak. As the excerpt from the story says, "I can face it no longer! I can bear it no longer!" She did not do anything because she could not. She looked at life, played the game, had gone with the flow of the wind, and tried to conceal the pain she was suffering. But how much effort she exerted in keeping her eyes close, her mouth shut and her feelings unrevealed, it would still spontaneously burst from the filled congested urn it was placed for a long time.
