Divergences

Another particular aspect of some selected cultures, like the Hindi, is that between family members they help each other to succeed, no matter if they need to give away such an important thing as part of their life, we call this solidarity. This can harm a relation just because if a person received help from another family member, this person needs to pay back that effort to the another person whenever they need it. "Behanji had to go to work. Her dowry went to pay for my school." (Beaty, 616) In this case Inder's sister, Behanji, had to go to work in order to pay for his education. This is an example of solidarity between family members, which is a really good thing because no one knows when the help of others may come in handy. Inder's sister played an important role in his life, that is why he owes so much to her. What she did change completely Inder's future.
Other cultures give plenty importance to children, while others don't really care about the legacy of their roots, which can create quite a problematic environment between a married couple, because there can be split opinions about having children or not. "She is impatient for a grandson to carry on the name." (Beaty, 616) "in India children are everything." (Beaty, 616) Inder's culture gives a very much importance to children because they will be the men of the future who will carry its legacy. This situation, about having children, creates a conflict between Inder and his parents, with Grace. Even though he has never thought about it, he wants to fulfill his parents dreams of having children, which reflects once more his ties with the Hindi culture.
Someone's own family can be as important as the couple, inclusive it can be more important. This hierarchy depends on culture. "What do you want me to do? I can't tell my parents what to do." (Beaty, 616) Inder cannot tell his parents if he wants or not to have children, which makes Grace angry because she wants him to express to his parents what he wants and what he does not, but that is just the way he was taught in India.
