Midwest Humanistic Education

 

The student chooses seven courses from eleven core curriculum areas: foreign cultures, historical studies (American or foreign), literature and arts (writing, literature, fine arts), moral reasoning, quantitative reasoning, science (natural or physical), and social analysis. To count towards core curriculum credit the seven courses must be from seven different core areas. Yale students face the least restrictive of the investigate ivy league schools. There, students have no set requirements except that they must display competency in a foreign language to graduate. Yale expects students to develop their own program that reflects the principles of liberal education. They are encouraged to take classes in writing and rhetoric, English literature, foreign language, history, mathematics, natural/physical sciences, and social sciences. If a student's program deviates greatly from these general guidelines, they must persuade their college dean and faculty program advisor that their course selection still reflects the principles of liberal education. .
             At Stanford University students follow a plan of general education as well. All courses taken to fulfill general education requirements must be taken for a grade. Students take two quarters of English, three quarters of introduction to humanities (all of which are taken first year, chosen from a specific list of courses). Furthermore, students take three quarters worth of natural science, physical science, or mathematics (up to two courses in and one section). During their four years of study, students take three quarters worth of humanities and social sciences; these courses may not overlap with introductory courses. Students take one quarter of world cultures, American cultures, or gender studies (may overlap with non introductory humanities courses). To graduate, students must have the equivalent of one year of a foreign language. Students of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology go through a six-subject core science to graduate.
