Progressive tax is where the higher the income, the more you pay in taxes. Regressive tax is the higher the income, the lower you pay in taxes. These taxes have different effects on different people. A conservative would argue in favor of the regressive tax based on both fairness and social benefit. According to conservatives, because of their superior skills, they have the ability to earn high incomes. Conservatives will favor any tax that reduces the overall progressivity of the tax structure. They feel they should be rewarded for their superior ability.
The last topic I will focus on is in chapter 16, Crime and Punishment. Crime refers to the breaking of any law. Next suitable question, is why do we have crime? Conservatives believe the causes of crime are personal characteristics of offenders, the decline of traditional values, and absence of adequate punishment. Conservatives believe the propensity toward crime is in all of us, its part of our nature. Young males seem to have the highest rates of offending. Some believe that criminality is significantly linked to IQ test scores, temperament, and body type. .
Certain environments convey the probability to be at a higher risk of criminal activities. Conservatives try to focus on the influence of the environment such as moral poverty, which they feel leads to crime. They feel crime is rooted in the weakening of family, church and schools, where people control their impulses and transmit values. .
Regardless of these observations, crime has declined substantially in the U.S. during the 1990s. Conservatives attribute the drop in large part to high rates of incarceration. More aggressive policing has also helped in the decline of crime. .
The definition the World Bank gave on poverty was disturbing. How anyone can even survive on a dollar is amazing. I understand inflation is at different percentages around the world, but that's awful, I can't see how anyone could have the ability to buy the bare necessities.
