The FARC objective is to support the interests of the poor, and has communist tendencies. While the ELN is comprised mostly of students and middle class people with a Marxist ideology. The major guerrilla organizations receive a significant part of their revenues from narcotics production and trafficking, as well as from money from kidnapping.
              Right wing Paramilitary Groups: are mainly self-defense units organized by various property owners. They are mostly of regional character and have the specific objective of protecting the interests of many diverse groups threatened by the guerrillas and drug cartels such as: land owners, cattle ranchers, emerald dealers, among others. Their main objective is to protect and maintain the status quo. Throughout the country, paramilitary groups have killed, tortured, and threatened civilians suspected of sympathizing with guerrillas. There have been accusations that paramilitary groups get some of their weapons from US military aid packages.
              The Military and National Police: are the legal forces from the government in charge of maintaining peace and civility in the country. However, accusations of complicity and cooperation with paramilitary groups have undermined their credibility and the government's efforts in the peace process. The security forces in Colombia have regularly failed to confront paramilitary groups, and members of the security forces sometimes illegally collaborate with paramilitary forces. .
             On the other hand, the principal victims of violence are civilians: peasant farmers, journalists, judicial officers, teachers, and union and community leaders, among others. These people have not only been victims of political killings, torture, kidnappings and threats; but also of major internal displacements from areas where guerrillas, paramilitary and government forces fight for control. .
             In the political arena, like in so many other countries in the region, corruption is an everyday occurrence.
