To Legalize Or Not To Legalize

Recent studies have shown marijuana is much "easier to obtain than alcohol" (Medical Marihuana) for minors. However, if legalized marijuana would be subjected through the same laws as cigarettes and tobacco, where one may have to present identification and be of a certain age "over 16" (CBC), to obtain the substance. Along with the control of who the substance is sold to, the price would also be regulated where high taxation would be fixed onto the price to discourage buyers (much like cigarettes). Through the legalization and control of marijuana by the Canadian government, many positive effects will result including the betterment of the safety of Canadian citizens.
The control of marijuana is far from the only positive outcome. Through the legalization of marijuana not only will society see a decrease in demand for the substance itself, but will see the decrease usage of other legal and illegal drugs, including alcohol and cocaine. As evidently shown through the selling of marijuana in The Netherlands, the number of hard drug addicts can be reduced drastically in comparison to the world. By allowing drug users a legal way of stimulating and achieving a similar high, many drug addicts would decrease or all together, stop the practice of using harder drugs, such as cocaine or heroin. A recent study conducted by the Australian Democrats (an Australian political party) concluded the "regulation of marijuana supply and taxation of use, would lead to less use of the drug" (Democrats). Alcohol would follow much the same pattern. As taken from a recent poll, high school students whom "63% drink regularly" (SNN), claimed if marijuana was legalized, "83% of the students would instead switch from alcohol to the use of marijuana" (SNN). Although many may think teenagers are only switching from one harmful drug to another, which is not the case. Research has proven marijuana is non-toxic and cannot cause overdose by excessive usage.
