long walk to forever

Catharine and Newt had grown up next door to each other, an now at 20 they hadn't seen each other for nearly a year. They had always been close and playful, but they had never discussed love.
Newt showed up on Catharine's doorstep by surprise one day, she was looking through a magazine completely devoted to brides. Catharine had fallen in love with a man named Henry while Newt was away, and their wedding was set to take place in less than a week. Newt asked Catharine to take a walk with him, she didn't want to go, but he persisted until she gave in. She told him she was getting married, and he of course knew already from writing to his mother. Catharine asked why Newt was here and he told her he was home to se her, and that he wasn't on leave, he was A.W.O.L. Catharine thought he was kidding and he told her he loved her. Being in love with another man, and never having even kissed Newt before, she thought the idea was absurd. She explained to Newt that he couldn't just come home and tell her he loved her, and if she had loved him, he would have known because women aren't very good at hiding love. Catharine had been crying but even in that moment Newt was seeing love, so he did the only thing he could do and kissed her.
They decided the only thing to do now was shake hands and always remember each other. But they kept walking until they ended up in a large orchard. Newt sat down against a tree, and Catharine afraid of hat might happen, sat down at a tree far away from him. She watched Newt sleep for about an hour and then woke him up. He said he loved her and she said she knew, then Newt asked her to marry him, and she said "no.". With that Newt quickly walked away and Catharine knew that if he turned and called to her she would go to him. Newt did stop and he did turn around, and he called "Catharine". She ran to him and put her arms around him, unable to speak.
