The Korean War

Before World War 2, Japan was in control of Korea, but by the end of the war the United States decided to occupy the southern half of Korea. The United States took control of South Korea because they had a fear of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics also known as USSR, or Soviet Union. (The Soviet Union had also joined North Korea.) The ruler of South Korea at this time was Syngman Rhee. He was an anti-Communist, there was more fighting under Rhee's control. The United States, United Nations, and the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea were all taking orders from Rhee. North Korea was ruled by Kim Sung, and joining his side were the USSR and China. However it is important to know that through 1949-1950 the United States did not support the invasion of the North by the South. .
But on June 1950 "border fighting" broke out (Forty 4). There were soldiers guarding the border between South Korea and North Korea, also known as the 38th parallel. Kim Sung the ruler of North Korea wanted his troops to cross the 38th parallel. He wanted them to cross it because he claimed that the South provoked the attack by crossing the parallel. His claims are still not found to be true. This invasion started the Korean War. At the end of July 1950 the United States combined with ROK were in a battle against KPA this battle resulted in Northern Korea controlling 90 percent of South Korea. By the end of August the KPA forces were at it again, this attempt went on for two weeks. The result was that they brought down major parts of the area they were attacking. Since the North was doing so well, they decided to attack again. This time they attacked the city of Taegu. That battle ended in 4,280 Americans dead. At the end of the war, Soviet forces accepted to surrender to Japanese forces north of that line while U.S. forces accepted to surrender South of it (Stanley 7). Now the north half of Korea is a "Soviet Client State" and the Southern half of Korea is "backed" by the United States (education 1 yahoo).
