trip to the Upper penninsula

After the 5 mile adventure over the bridge we stopped at a road cut that laid under an overpass. This is where we made our first collection, which happened to be Mackinaw Breccia. This is a jagged conglomerate made up of Dolomite was formed when an underlying layer eroded away and the dolomite collapsed. The Mackinaw Bridge is built on this. .
We left the road cut and drove on US-2 along Lake Michigan until we hit M-77 which led us to Seney. This is where I handed off the keys for the day because driving from Clinton all the way to Seney was pretty tiring. I figured the distance was exactly 386.2 miles and would have been a 7 hour and would have been a 7 hour and 23 minute drive straight through.
Munising Falls, A part of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, came about 45 minutes after leaving Seney. The fairly short trail to the falls followed the river up to the falls. Sandstone was formed and uplifted many many moons ago in the Cambrian, forming a waterfall. The trail that was used to walk behind the falls had closed a few years back due to erosion. Falling water cut back a cliff slowly over time. Eventually the cliff collapsed under its own weight, landing right on the trail.
Down the road from Munising Falls was is another part of Pictured Rocks, Miners Castle. Here you can see two different rock formations, The Jacobsville Sandstone, and the underlying Castle Rock Sandstone. Miner's castle is an old lake stack that is being exposed more and more over time. As the tower was being exposed, a hole appearedright in the middle of the rock. Eventually the arc on the top of the hole caved in leaving 2 pillars, making it look like a castle. As of right now another window is beind exposed and eventually the same thing will happen over again.
That was our last of our stops for the day. We checked in at the Cedar Motor Inn in Marquette. We had about a half hour to get ready to go to dinner at the Villa Capri, right down the road.
