Within both aspects, different ranges of resources exist and exchanges occur with two or more resources. Rewards are what the individual gains from the relationship. Status can be an example of rewards in particular symbolic manner because it isn't a tangible service and it is of specific high significance to the woman. The man may have a high official occupation, based on evaluative judgment; the woman can gain high prestige in the relationship of exchange with the man. Costs are what an individual must give to maintain a relationship. Cleaning is an example of service. While her man is at his high position job, the woman may stay home and take care of the house. Service is an example of concrete and universal elements because it is a visible sign in the exchange of their relationship and is of relatively low significance when compared to resources such as love. To receive some reward, the woman may have to put in some cost to maximize her profit. Profits determine the dynamic of the relationship. If the man gives love, the woman expects to receive love. That is, all individuals will want to maximize profits and will not continue the relationship if they"re not gaining profit. Love is somewhere in the middle of concrete and symbolic aspects because it can be showed through concrete or symbolic actions. Love however is extremely particular because in a man/woman relationship, it is probably of the highest significance to each person. .
In the love relationship with a man and woman, many exchange rules can be applied. The first rule of in the game is that "the larger the amount of a resource possessed by a person, the more likely it is to be given to others". If the man makes a substantial amount of money at his high position job, the more likely he is to share his money with the woman. Perhaps he will buy her concrete goods to display his love for her. Foa and Foa created a structure to display the value and relationship between the different categories of resources.
