I chose to watch the interactions of the mother and the little boy. The little boy was very well behaved. He was working on a coloring sheet independently. Occasionally he asked his mother to help him with something. The mother watched her child work without interference. She was involved when he asked her to be. Whenever he looked up at her she would smile approvingly at his efforts and was available to meet his needs. .
This mother's parenting style was authoritative. The boy's behavior was indicative of the mother's style of parenting. He was confident of her approval, well behaved in a moderately adult atmosphere, and seemed eager to please her. The child did not seem highly dependent on her for constant attention. "Children whose parents are authoritative are socially competent, self-reliant, and socially responsible." Observation #2, indulgent/permissive parenting style.
The example of the permissive style of parenting was observed at the grocery store. I had to stand in line behind this mother with her two children for quite a while because she was so intent on watching the checker's every entry and she was coupons, some of which were out-of-date. There was a baby sitting in the shopping cart who looked about 8-10 months old and a little boy about 3 years old with her. The 3-year-old boy was running inside the checker's gate. He had a balloon tied to his arm, which interfered with the checker's job every time this child entered his space. The child would stand there as if waiting for his mother to smile at him and to my amazement, she would smile at him as if to approve of his obnoxious behavior.
