Different relationships between people can change lives forever. Some relationships can bring out negative characteristics. My relationship with my parents has taught me that if I start something I should always do my best to complete it. I have learned to be independent and to look for the answers to obstacles within myself. My relationship with my sister has taught me to help others in the time of need. She also taught to me to listen to people before I try to help them in a situation. Both of these relationships have taught me that I should believe in myself more than I do because many times others view you as more capable than you view yourself.
The book, The Color Purple shows many different relationships. Many of these relationships are negative. One of these relationships sticks out, not because it is positive, but because of the way it helps to change a persons life. The relationship that existed between Celie and Shug Avery can superficially be viewed as purely sexual. They enjoyed the fondling and arousal of lying naked together. However, I believe it had a much deeper meaning. The intimacy between Celie and Shug can only be described with one word; love. To Celie and Shug love was the comfort and security of lying in each other's arms and the tender words exchanged. "This song I am about to sing is called Miss. Celie's song . First time somebody made something and name it after me."(77) Also the sheer joy that flowed through their bodies from each other's touch.
This emotion was a first for Celie. Never before had she had hands placed on her body in a caring way, nor was offered complimentary words. Celie's experience with Shug changed her life. Shug feed Celie the strength and the confidence she needed to gain control of her life. With this love Celie flourished. She no longer believed her only choice in life was to serve Mr. _____. Shug shined the light on a different path and Celie followed.
