.
"Children may be less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others". This is one of the three major findings that psychological research has found. This is seen when children fail to help each other or get help when another is in trouble or involved in a fight with another person. This in tern will make the general public less sensitive to things such as war, finding it commonplace for people to be hurt and killed. People will become less likely to help another, such as the final episode of Seinfeld where the cast watched a man get robbed and did nothing to help him. .
"Children may be more fearful of the world around them". This is also known as the "mean world" syndrome. When young, believing that the world is out to get you and that random violence happens at every street corner will have a drastic effect on socialization in later years. People will be unwilling to help each other. The people talking on the streets, asking directions, asking to break a dollar all that will be history if this syndrome were to take over everyone. This "mean world" syndrome can create stereotypes and nasty attitudes. Due to misunderstandings violent incidents are more likely to occur if some is to think that a mistake was done intentionally. .
"Children may be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others". This is the big one. It was found in studies by Leonard Eron Ph.D. and his associates at the University of Illinois that kids who viewed "many hours" of T.V violence became more likely to show aggressive behavior as teenagers and were more likely to be arrested and prosecuted as adults. Aletha Houston Ph.D. from the University of Kansas finds that children who watch violent programming are more likely to hit other classmates, disobey rules and leave tasks unfinished more often than children who did not view such programming. .
Some steps have been taken to help stop the problem of children being influenced by violent programming, such attempts are the V-chip which allows parents to block unwanted programs and the rating system that lets parents know what age group programs are aimed at.
