Long Day's Journey into Night

 

            The play,Long Day's Journey into Night? is a play that tells a story about a family's adventure through a day. This family had many personal and emotional problems along with problems with each other. Given the time this play went public, people could not believe what they was watching or reading because it was not along the traditional scheme.
             The theme and characterization of this play was about a mother and father in wealthy standing with children that had problems of their own. The mother had a problem, which was caused by a doctor; she was addicted to a painkiller called morphine. The father was a person that had all the money that a person would ever need. He was raised poor and didn't take his money for granted. He was a very tight with his money. The children they had were two sons. The oldest son was a person that worked hard for his father but never made much of himself during his lifetime. The younger son was a college graduate that had a serious illness, which they called consumption. This illness was fatal to a person at this time because there was no known cure for it. .
             The title of this play was,Long Day's Journey into Night.? This title fits this play very well considering the actions that took place in the play. This started in the morning where the father and sons was working outside and the mother and the sick son was staying inside. The father and son were arguing about the sick son. The amount of money that the father would be spending on the sick son was the conversation topic. The mother was suffering from withdraw, so her mood changed often and suddenly at times. She worried a lot about her sick son because she didn't want to lose one of her kids, considering the fact that her father died from the same illness. The boys drunk a lot of alcohol which made the mother mad at times, and didn't help during some of the arguments. .
             Later on in the day and including the night the family was getting back from to doctor, they found out that the ill son had that devastating illness.
