Confucianism unlike other western religions is primarily an ethical system to which rituals at important times in ones life have been added. It consists of four life passages. Birth, coming of age, marriage, and death.
• Birth - the T'ai-shen, or spirit of the foetus, protects the expectant woman. A special procedure is followed when the placenta is disposed and he mother is given a special diet and is allowed rest for a month after delivery. The mother's family supplies all the items required by the baby on the first, fourth and twelfth monthly anniversary of the birth.
• Coming of age - between the ages of 12-15 for boys and girls special ceremonies are held.
