Utopia vs. Dystopia

There are an innumerable number of types of governments that a country can be run under. The Utopian government is made up of two very different styles of government: democratic and oligarchic. This apparent contradiction Utopia a peoples oligarchy, in which the citizens have a say in the actions of the government however, they do not choose the small number of leaders who are in charge of the country. Thirty families choose a Syphogrant and for every ten Syphogrants, there is an Archphilarch. Of the two hundred Archphilarchs, four are nominated as potential candidates to become the Prince. Once the Prince is chosen, they are in power for the duration of their life, unless they are removed for suspicions of attempting to enslave society (More, 1516, p. OF THE MAG). The oppressing Oceanic government, under the leadership of Big Brother, is almost a mirror image of the Soviet Union under the rule of the tyrant, Joseph Stalin. This type of government is a totalitarian anarchy: one in which only a few people control the entire power of the country, which has no laws. There is a distinct social hierarchy in Oceania consisting of the Proles, the Outer Party, the Inner Party and Big Brother, in increasing importance. The Proles "did not qualify to belong to the Party" and therefore were largely ignored by the government (Orwell, 1949, p. 53). Members of the Outer Party manned the various government ministries in Oceania. They were required to do the mundane, day-to-day, tasks of making sure that the entire populace was being loyal to Big Brother. Interspersed within the Outer Party workers, are members of the Inner Party whose responsibility is to oversee the workers inside the government offices. Their presence alone is enough to keep the workers on-task and focussed on the job at hand in order to benefit of the rest of society (Orwell, 1949, p. 73). The fact that there is infrastructure in place that operates as a governing party does not make them alike in any sense.
