It alleviates the need to build costly new buildings by assigning teachers and students to a particular track and they follow the same schedule throughout the year. They also are in school and on vacation at the same time. It creates a "school-within-a-school- concept. (NAYRE) .
The Multi-track system that alleviates the need for a school to build additional buildings also incorporates growing attendance. "Implementing a four-track year-round calendar extends the capacity of a school by 33%. A school with the capacity of 750 students can accommodate 1,000 students, as only three tracks of 250 would be in school at the same time; there would always be one track on vacation or intercession every day of the school year,"" (NAYRE).
There are many benefits of YRE that are educational. "The biggest selling point for the year-round calendar, supporters say, is minimizing the forget-factor',"" (Lawson, 48). Students that are on year-round calendars also can take advantage of enrichment opportunities during intercessions. Intercessions are the periods of time that are rescheduled from the summer vacations. Schools often run courses either all day for a week or a half-day for two weeks, depending on the school district. These programs provide help for struggling students sooner than the conventional summer school programs. (Lawson, 48) .
There are many other classes available at most schools during intercessions. The diverse offerings range from academic topics such as "Math Magic- to hobbies and sports such as gardening, photography, and soccer. Although these classes are not mandatory, many students choose to attend. Schools often charge a small fee for students who want to take a class, and most offer financial assistance to those who can not afford it. (Gismondi/Nasser, 65).
Parents have also found advantages beyond educational. "The real eye-opener for parents is often the first three-week break in the fall when they go to Disney World and there aren't any lines,"" says Susan Howard, principal at Warren Townships Lowell Elementary School.
